In addition to Mohs micrographic surgery, we perform a variety of surgical procedures
on the skin for cancer as well as for other indications. We routinely remove skin
growths that are suspicious or irritating or aesthetically displeasing
(note that the latter are not covered by insurance).
We can also improve the appearance of scars through scar revision techniques, dermabrasion, or laser treatments.
Resurfacing procedures, such as dermabrasion and chemical peeling, are very effective at
rejuvenating skin that has been damaged by scarring or excessive sun exposure. There is
even some scientific evidence that these procedures can decrease the likelihood of skin
cancer in patients at risk. Pulsed-dye laser treatments with our V-Beam laser are also helpful in the
management of scarring.
We remove congenital nevi (moles present since birth) through
routine excision or serial excision (staged excision). Serial excision is a technique that
is most useful for removing larger moles and is very effective at minimizing the degree of scarring.
It consists of a series of two or more operations spaced several months apart in which just a
portion of the mole is removed during each procedure. This approach is an excellent alternative
to the use of tissue expanders and skin grafting.
