Psoriasis 2018-10-25T06:37:08-04:00

Millions of people in the US are living with psoriasis, and many of them suffer the pain silently, and often experience a diminished quality of life because of the condition. Our goal at Skin Cancer Specialists, P.C. & Aesthetic Center, is to provide sufferers with effective psoriasis solutions.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes the inflammation and scaling of the skin.

Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of the disease, and is characterized by  raised red patches of thick, flaky skin that usually appear on the  lower back, scalp, knees, and elbows.

When the skin is healthy, the outer epidermal layer sheds and replaces skin cells in a timely way. However, with psoriasis, the older cells don’t slough off as quickly as they should, and this leads to a build-up of cells on the surface of the skin, causing the skin to thicken in some areas.

What causes psoriasis?

Medical researchers are not sure what causes the rate of cell turnover to go into overdrive. However, they believe it is linked to a disruption in the normal function of the immune system.

Triggers of psoriasis have also been identified, these include: infections, stress, injuries to the skin, and certain medications such as lithium and Inderal. People with a family history of the disease have an increased risk of developing psoriasis.

How to treat psoriasis

There is no cure for psoriasis, but there are treatment options that can help you effectively manage the disease. This may be done with the use of medications that help to clear the skin and ease symptoms such as redness, flakiness, and thickness. Topical treatments such as creams and ointments are also beneficial, as well as Light Therapy.
